Appreciative Coaching®: A Positive Process for Change

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.”

William James (1842-1910)

William James, a leading American psychologist, philosopher and physician living into the early 20th century, felt strongly that humans had an inner process that directed them and the choices they made. This was a revolutionary concept at a time when scientific thought viewed humans as machine-like and only capable of being changed through external efforts. The brilliance of James was to reconceive the human mind as inherently purposive and selective — from within.

Appreciative Coaching® Services for Executives & Businesses

My coaching and consulting services are based on an ‘appreciative’ approach, which means looking at clients from a positive and life-enhancing perspective rather than viewing them in limited or problem-oriented ways. Such a perspective can create dramatic new results by linking thoughts and actions to outcomes.

My services include executive and corporate coaching, small and family business coaching, and life coaching for individuals and professionals.

I can help in multiple ways:

  • Support for individuals in releasing limiting thought and communication patterns to more effectively access their unique strengths, talents and assets.

  • Strategizing on ways to successfully navigate the complexities, ambiguity and politics of organization life.

The Science and Art of Appreciative Coaching®

Over the past 35+ years, a science of positive human change has emerged which reflects the tremendous shift that has been occurring, from viewing people in mechanistic, limited and problem-oriented ways to seeing them as dynamic, energy-based beings in continual process. Our lives are embodied in energy and movement and we have the capacity to reinterpret and find meaning in our lives.

Appreciative Coaching® provides the science and practices for triggering new inner connections of understanding. The scientific and philosophical base of Appreciative Coaching® is founded on multiple perspectives: Social Constructionism, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy/Coaching, Appreciative Inquiry, Positive Organizational Scholarship, Positive Psychology, and the new science of Positive Emotions.

The Five Principles of Appreciative Coaching®

The core assumptions of the science and philosophy of Appreciative Inquiry/Appreciative Coaching® are deeply embedded in five clearly defined principles.

  • How we see the world is how we construct it. What we pay attention to and are curious about forms the foundation for how we take action in creating our future. The ways in which humans communicate, interact, create symbols, and construct metaphors with one another create our social reality.

Application: What we pay attention to grows.

Our brains are wired so that we can only focus on one thing at a time. Like a Gestalt figure/ground image, whatever we pay attention to becomes the “figure” and everything else the “ground.”

This explains why the power of our attention and intention is so great. If we are focused on the negative, on what we don’t want, or on our problems, we are not able—at the same time—to focus on the positive, on what we do want, or on solutions. We are constantly making choices as to what we focus on and therefore what we will grow in our lives.

  • The Positive Principle is an expression of all the concrete ways in which we can focus on the power of the positive in our lives. Research shows that the more positive affect we can build, the more likely we are to succeed. Positive inquiry moves us towards what we most desire. When we are in a positive mode, we act more effectively.

Application: Our positive emotions build capacity.

Negative and positive emotions are not opposites but fulfill different functions and are both contagious. The negative emotions of fight, flight or freeze help us react to threatening situations to preserve our safety and survival. In contrast, positive emotions like hope, interest, contentment, joy and love create resources for action. They nurture our human capacity and potential by broadening our capacity to build skills, engage in community and be inspired.

  • The Anticipatory Principle relates to our human capacity for anticipating the future. Our brains are literally wired to anticipate or imagine the future. This human ability is one of the most important resources we have for change. Our images of the future not only guide our current behavior in the direction of that future, they also create a tension within us that compels us to act towards that future.

    Application: We anticipate the future.

There is a relationship between positive imagery and positive action. With no conscious effort, we humans project our thoughts, actions and desires into the future—like a projector illuminating a picture on a screen. What will we have for dinner tonight? What will we do this weekend? We live only in the present and anticipate the future from the present. The power of vision is creating a conscious picture of the future that draws us forward.

  • The Simultaneity Principle uses the power of the present to effect change. Inquiry and change are not separate moments in time (as in traditional problem solving) but happen simultaneously. We change the present through our questions and dialogue, therefore changing the meanings of the past and future. As the past and future change, so do the meanings of the present – simultaneously. The questions we ask “laser” attention in a certain direction, intended or not, and sow the seeds of change.

Application: Inquiry builds the foundation for change. Inquiry = change.

Change occurs when we are prompted to think in new ways. Inquiry directs both attention and action simultaneously. We can ask ourselves negative questions (what’s wrong with me?) or we can ask growth questions (what do I need to learn? What strengths of mine can help me move forward?). With the very first question we ask ourselves, we begin to direct the kind of change we’ll make.

  • The Poetic Principle affirms that we are continually interpreting and reinterpreting the stories of our lives. Through the choices we make, we find that the experiences of our past, present and future are endless sources of learning and interpretation, just like reading a good poem at different stages in life. Our life journey does not take a straight path and new situations will always arise to challenge us and call upon our inner resilience. This principle helps us shift our perspective to seeing possibilities for new stories about ourselves.

Application: We have the power to change.

From the mechanistic perspective, the present is seen as only one brief moment on a fixed line from past through present to future. The past is considered the cause and predictor for actions in the present and future, making human change seem difficult and incremental. With this principle, the past is only one possible influencer of action and change. We actually live only in the “now.” Thus, the present and future are equally valid influencers and we are capable of sudden and profound changes.

The Art of Appreciative Coaching®: the Four Stages

Appreciative Coaching® occurs in four main stages that are dynamic and interrelated. At the model’s center is identifying the topic for the coaching engagement (in positive or neutral language to avoid slipping into problem-solving). The stages are sequential, iterative and interrelated.

  • The Discovery Stage is about reflecting and celebrating strengths and successes to help individuals truly appreciate what gives life to them.

  • The Dream Stage is about articulating potential and creating a dream or a preferred future to aim towards.

  • The Design Stage is about directing attention and action to help clients become designers of their own future.

  • The Destiny Stage is about recognizing the state of being in which individuals have embraced the reality of their dream in the present. They are moving forward (becoming) yet living life fully and well in the present (being).

  • An amazing talent to explore and focus on positive human change.

“Through highly documented research, she teaches coaches to understand how they can directly impact their clients by having them become aware that they are not objects to be fixed but dynamic energy-based beings in continual development. A stimulating reframing of our beliefs which shows how positive emotions trigger upward spirals including the willingness and capacity for change.”

  • I wouldn’t be where I am...

“I felt so lost and trapped when I first started working with Ann, but she helped me to see that I have great strengths that do translate into different professional settings. I believe I have finally found a sector of the retail industry where I can excel and that is much more of a natural fit for me. It makes everything else in my non-professional life even feel infinitely better. Thanks for your work and guidance. I wouldn’t be where I am now without your help.”

  • So grateful...

“I give Ann so much credit for helping me become who I am. I still have my five words of what success looks like to me on a sticky note posted on my bulletin board. I reference it often and am so grateful for our time together. “

  • A strong resource in my strategic planning and problem-solving

“Though Ann's credentials and professionalism are what initially struck me, I have found her a strong resource in my strategic planning and problem-solving issues. Her ability to listen, offer perspective and even healthy nudging occasionally is very effective to accelerate progress in both my personal and my professional endeavors."

  • Talented, patient, insightful, kind and tenacious

“Working with Ann has helped me reclaim control of my life—which now evolves more by design than default. I was successful—writing books, happy clients, financial security—but I wasn’t happy. I was too exhausted to be happy. I didn’t have time to be happy. I didn’t need someone to enhance my over-achiever drive. I needed someone to enhance my ability to live a sane life, a happy life. Ann adapted immediately to my special needs. Sometimes my action items are “go horseback riding” or “get a massage.” What is amazing is how much my business continues to improve. My clients like me better when I’m relaxed! Who knew? (smile) Ann is talented, patient, insightful, kind and tenacious. Everything I need in a coach.”
